Laizhi Zheng was born in Yinan County, Shandong Province, the hometown of Confucius and Mencius. He developed a passion for literature when he was a small boy and gained a passion for film after he graduated from China's top film school, the Beijing Film Academy. He has a younger brother with the same passion who became an actor. In 2007, his first film, a short named Disaster, was selected into the Short Films Section of the 60th Festival De Cannes. In the same year, he was the assistant director for the film-Dou Niu (2009)_. In 2008, he made his first feature film Beautiful Sunset. He also made two documentaries. One is about Yimeng, a place famous for being the revolutionary base in China's liberation movement. The second is about the contemporary poet Jingzhi He.
