I Am the Night - Season 1
It may be different when we see the series full of dramatic events. The series breaks up a large collection of dramatic events highlighted with a title at hand, Fona (India Eisley) and Jay (Chris Pine) heading to Hawaii to find Tamar. The animals are hoping to find some answers about who they are, Jay hoping to find answers about the story Hodel wrote about that ruined his career.

There's no denying the spellbindingly ominous mood cast over six episodes as Night plunges its protagonists into a sordid subculture of sex cults and hip "happenings" that reveal the more tarnished side of Tinseltown.

The miniseries attempts to sew together true events with fictional characters and storylines to mixed success.

Even though the limp script leaves something to be desired, I Am the Night succeeds in terms of mood and sense of place.

You'll hate yourself for enjoying its seedy dark universe inspired by infamy, a place where you can get yourself killed for insulting someone's paintings. The fabulous avante garde score is, dare I say it, killer. Buckle up.

Writer Sam Sheridan, adapting Fauna Hodel's autobiography, and director Patty Jenkins...sweep the viewer into their milieu from the very first shot.

Pacing can be frustrating -- this mini would be a lot more effective if it were cut to four hours -- but the surprises and twists in the final two episodes make it more than worthy of your investment.

Although the Black Dahlia case is still cold, there's no denying that the family connections that I Am the Night has been loosely based on are fascinating, yet creepy as hell.
January 25, 2019
It boasts a terrific lead performance from Chris Pine, but the story's much too slow to get going and doesn't deliver enough payoff to merit the wait.
