EPISODE
Moonbeam City - Season 1
The show follows the exploits of Dazzle Novak, an idiotic detective who commits more crimes than the criminals he tries to lock up. Whether it’s food court drug lords or sexed-up robot dolphins, stars Rob Lowe, Elizabeth Banks, Will Forte & Kate Mara hit the steamy streets of the new animated series Moonbeam City to straighten out the latest crime wave and some filthy new wave beats.

Dazzle Novak is the ultimate Eighties supercop in this fantastic animated romp, set in a neon-and-pastel Hair Decade where everything looks like a Duran Duran album cover. It's Miami Vice times Archer with a side of Scarface.

What holds promise for future episodes is the mix of strange throwaway jokes and striking visual style that makes its dialogue-heavy jokes go down easier.
September 16, 2015
Does TV need another "Archer"? Not if it's "Moonbeam City," a poor replica featuring the smug voice of Rob Lowe... Despite the high-powered cast which includes Elizabeth Banks and Will Forte, the whole operation feels second-rate.

The series certainly has the look to stand out among the animated sitcom crowd, as well as the lineup of celebrity voice actors. But little about the writing, the characters or the humor feels very original.

The new Comedy Central cartoon-starring the voice of Rob Lowe-is so willfully dumb that it might make you wonder if it's meta-dumb. Don't be fooled.

Based, apparently, on the concept that anything from the '80s is inherently hilarious.
September 21, 2015
Sex, violence, retro style in animated 80s cop comedy.

I rather liked it, though for its form possibly more than for its content. (Note: Subsequent episodes improve on the pilot.)
September 18, 2015
The comedy in Moonbeam City is scattershot, and it misses more than it hits. The writers should concentrate their fire on one target.
September 16, 2015
This all has the makings of a great satire of the '80s, something vibrant and witty and sharp. But what Moonbeam City offers instead is stuff we've seen before. It's either disappointingly generic or way over-the-top and ridiculous.
