Wallander (2008) - Season 1

Description
Existential detective Kurt Wallander must battle his own demons as he works to solve a series of bizarre crimes in southern Sweden. This series is made up of four distinct films, each one a mysterious journey into murder, deception, and baffling crimes. Follow Inspector Kurt Wallander - a disillusioned everyman - as he struggles against a rising tide of violence in the seemingly sleepy backwaters in and around Ystad in beautiful southern Sweden. Brilliantly acted and visually dazzling, Wallander is based on the bestselling Swedish crime novels by Henning Mankell.

Mr. Branagh dominates the screen, but there are some excellent, low-key performances by supporting actors who play Wallander's colleagues.

When a series has only two interesting things about it, and one of them is that it's set in Sweden, you may ask yourself, "What's the point?"

It's the road traveled that makes Wallander more than worthy of its Masterpiece imprimatur.

What makes Wallander memorable in the end is the arc that underlies them -- the detective's own story as he plummets toward emotional and physical crisis.

Kenneth Branagh is perfect as one of its broken-down men.

The strength of the script and Branagh's finely drawn performance - not to mention the excellent scenes between Branagh and David Warner, who plays Wallander's dad - make up for missteps.

As wonderfully played by Kenneth Branagh, Wallander is a fine addition to the tradition of PBS' Mystery!
