The fifth season offers a new series of events, where Gregg receives an annoying call, apparently killing Kathy, who died instantly. On the other hand, the investigation imposes more challenges and pressures on Gregg Abe's relationship because he must make more suggestions about what actually happened. In those moments, Abby refers to a lover man as the mastermind behind the intrusion, and Gina suffers complications that will delay her work suddenly.

The characters have so much definition and integrity, and the milieu is so fastidiously conveyed, that NYPD Blue doesn't seem to be stretching for sensationalism, only reaching for realism.

Thankfully, Smits and Franz are superior TV actors who are able to make this buddy-buddy pledge of allegiance into something both crowd-pleasing and not excessively maudlin.
