The ninth season begins with McDowell, Medavoy and Jones, who start investigating a shooting incident at a restaurant where they watch the news showing a picture of Cebuys. Perhaps this man was involved in a shootout, and Sipowicz decided to thank McDowell for her intervention at the bar last night, where there was more unusual unrest.

The season seems promising, if not fresh. NYPD Blue long ago lost the right to that adjective, but a renewed national interest in and respect for cops could give this series an unexpected boost.
